Ohio Charitable Registration

Ohio Charitable Registration Help in Cincinnati, Filed On Time

IRS approval is only half of it. Most Ohio charities also owe the state a registration and a yearly report.

Your group got its IRS letter, so the paperwork must be done. In Ohio, it usually isn’t. Most charities also have to register with the Ohio AG’s office and send a report every year. Many Cincinnati groups only learn this when a letter from the state’s Charitable Law Section arrives. We help you register, file each yearly report and keep it all on one calendar with your IRS filings. You can bring us a state letter, a box of old records or just a question.

When You Need Ohio Charitable Registration

Most Ohio charities must register, and the state says that applies whether or not the group has tax-exempt status. Two things usually bring a group in. One is holding money or property for a charitable purpose in Ohio. The other is asking Ohioans for donations. If you run a food pantry, a scholarship fund, a youth program or an annual gala, you are likely in.

The most common exemption is for groups organized and run only for religious purposes, like most churches. That line can be thin. A church’s daycare, school or community center set up as a separate nonprofit may need to register even though the church does not. The state’s online charitable registration information sheet covers who must file and suggests registering within six months of forming.

Our Ohio Charitable Registration Process

First we confirm whether you must register at all. If you must, we gather your governing papers and your IRS determination letter, or the state’s form for groups without IRS status yet. Then we complete the registration through the state’s online charity portal with you.

After that comes the yearly report. It is due by the 15th day of the 5th month after your year ends, the same timing as the IRS due date for exempt organization returns. For most groups that is May 15. Ohio generally lets you file a complete copy of your Form 990 in place of its own financial report, and it honors an IRS extension. Because we prepare 990s too, we file both together so neither gets missed.

Ohio Charitable Registration Cost in Cincinnati

Our fee depends on whether you are registering for the first time or catching up on years you missed. Late years mean more forms, more records to find and possible state late fees. If we already prepare your 990, the yearly state report takes much less time. The state’s own fees are separate, paid to Ohio, and scale with your group’s size. We tell you our fee up front.

Common Questions

Probably not. Groups organized and run only for religious purposes are usually exempt. We check whether any program the church runs as a separate group needs its own registration.
