Every fall, booster club volunteers sell nachos and sports drinks at Katy ISD stadiums. Few of them think about the IRS. But a booster club with its own tax-exempt status owes a yearly return like any other charity, and so do the food pantry, the scholarship fund and the family foundation. Miss it three years running and the exemption is gone. We prepare Form 990 returns for exempt groups across Katy and get them filed before the deadline.
When You Need Form 990 Preparation
The form depends on size. The IRS chart showing which annual return an exempt group files draws the lines. If your gross receipts are normally 50,000 dollars or less, the 990-N e-Postcard is usually enough. Under 200,000 dollars in gross receipts and under 500,000 dollars in assets, you can use the 990-EZ. Cross either line and you file the full 990. A private foundation files the 990-PF at any size.
The return is due on the 15th day of the fifth month after your year ends. For a group on the calendar year, that means May 15. Form 8868 buys an automatic six months. A group with 1,000 dollars or more of gross income from a business unrelated to its mission also owes Form 990-T. Think of a charity that sells advertising in its gala program. Churches are excused from the 990 itself, but the 990-T rule can still reach them.
Our Form 990 Preparation Process
We begin with what you have: books if you keep them, bank statements if you don’t, plus payroll reports and a list of officers and board members. Then we sort income into gifts, program fees and investment income, and costs into program, management and fundraising. Volunteers who prepare their own 990 most often stumble on that split, and it is the part donors and grant makers read first.
Next come the schedules that fit your group, like the public support test many charities have to pass. You get a draft with short notes on anything unusual. When you approve it, we e-file and send copies for your records and your board. If your year ends December 31 and the books aren’t ready, we file the 8868 first and finish during the extension.
Form 990 Preparation Cost in Katy
A 990-N takes very little of our time. A full 990 with several schedules takes far more. The other big factor is your records. Matched, organized books cost less to work from than twelve months of bank statements we have to sort line by line. More programs, restricted grants and a 990-T each add work. You hear our fee before we begin.
Why the 990 Matters for Your Texas Exemption
In Texas, most nonprofits earn their franchise and sales tax exemption by showing the Comptroller their IRS status. The Comptroller’s exemption questions page says that when a state exemption is based on federal status, losing the federal exemption automatically ends the state one. So a missed 990-N can cost a Katy group twice: once with the IRS and again with the state. Keeping the yearly return current protects both.
Why Choose Us for Form 990 Preparation
Nonprofit returns are a regular part of our year, not a once-a-season favor. We also keep books and run payroll for exempt groups, so we know how the numbers should flow from a ledger onto the 990. We have prepared taxes since 1993 and stay open all year, which counts when your return is due in May or your extension runs out in November. Drop off records at our Kingsland Boulevard office or send them online.
The 990 is one part of ongoing accounting for Katy tax-exempt groups.
Common Questions
Our booster club has never filed anything. What should we do?
First, check whether the club has its own IRS exemption or falls under a parent group. If it has its own status, file the missing returns as soon as you can. If the club has not yet missed three years in a row, filing now keeps the IRS from revoking its status.
Can a small group file a full 990 instead of the 990-N?
Yes. Some groups do because a grant maker wants to see real numbers. We can tell you whether the extra work is worth it for your group.
