Your federal and Ohio returns get all the attention, but Cincinnati wants a return too. The city charges its own income tax, and it is easy to miss when your paycheck already shows a city line. Some people owe more at filing time. Others are owed money back and never ask for it. We prepare the Cincinnati return alongside the rest, so nothing is left behind.
When You Need a Cincinnati City Income Tax Return
The city’s income tax division lists the current rate as 1.8%, in effect since October 2020. If you live in the city, that tax applies to your earned income, even when you work somewhere else. If your job is in a suburb that withholds its own tax, the city’s tax FAQ says residents get credit for that tax, but only up to 1.8%.
You also need a city return if you had self-employment or side income with no city tax taken out, or if you moved in or out of Cincinnati during the year. Skipping it does not make the tax go away. It usually turns into a letter a year or two later.
Working From Home for a Downtown Employer
Many people who live outside the city still have Cincinnati tax withheld, because their employer’s office is downtown. If you worked some days from home outside the city, you may be able to get part of that tax back. The city publishes a nonresident refund return for this, and its 2022 version added a box for work done at home. You need a record of the days you worked outside Cincinnati, and your employer may need to confirm them. We fill out the form and figure the share that is due back to you.
Our Cincinnati City Income Tax Return Process
We start with your W-2s and look at boxes 18 through 20, where your employer reports local wages and tax. We check which cities were withheld for and whether you lived in each one. Then we prepare the city return with your federal and Ohio returns, apply any credit for work-city tax, and file. If you are owed a refund, we tell you which city it comes from and roughly when to look for it.
Cincinnati City Income Tax Return Cost in Cincinnati
For most people the city return is part of the regular tax visit. The cost goes up when there is more to sort out, like wages from several cities, a move during the year, self-employment income, or a nonresident refund that needs a day-by-day count. We tell you the fee before we start.

Common Questions
My employer already withholds city tax. Do I still file?
Often, yes. Withholding may be for the city where you work, not the one where you live, and the credit between them has limits. A return also lets you claim back any extra that was withheld.
I moved out of Cincinnati mid-year. What do I file?
You usually file a part-year return. You owe Cincinnati tax on what you earned while you lived there, and the other city may tax the rest. We split the year for you.
