Pastors in Cincinnati often find out the hard way that their tax return does not work like anyone else’s. You may get a W-2 from the church and still owe self-employment tax. Your housing allowance may be left off your income for one tax and counted for another. We work with churches and ministers all the time, so we know where these returns go wrong and how to set them up right.
When You Need Clergy and Minister Tax Returns
You need a preparer who knows clergy rules if you are an ordained or commissioned minister paid by a church, if you receive a housing allowance, or if you also earn fees for weddings, funerals or guest preaching. It matters even more if you owed a big amount last year, because many ministers have no Social Security or Medicare tax taken out of their pay.
The IRS topic on earnings for clergy explains why. Ministry pay is generally covered by self-employment tax. The housing allowance can be left out of income tax to the extent you spend it on housing, but it still counts for self-employment tax. The church must name the allowance before it pays it.
Our Clergy and Minister Tax Return Process
We start with your W-2, the church’s housing allowance letter, and your actual housing costs, like rent or mortgage, utilities and furniture. We compare the allowance to what you spent and to your home’s fair rental value. Then we figure your self-employment tax on Schedule SE and include any fees from weddings and funerals.
We prepare your federal, Ohio and city returns together. If you owed a lot last year, we help you set up quarterly estimated payments or ask the church to withhold extra, so next April is easier.
City Tax on Church Pay
If you live in Cincinnati, the city’s 1.8% income tax applies to your church salary too. If your church does not withhold city tax for you, the full amount shows up at filing time. If your church is in a suburb that taxes your pay, Cincinnati only gives credit up to 1.8% for that tax. We check both and file the city return with the rest, so a missing city return does not turn into a letter.
Clergy and Minister Tax Return Cost in Cincinnati
The cost depends on how many pieces are involved: a housing allowance, fees from outside services, a second job, or a spouse with their own income. A pastor with one church W-2 takes less time than one with several sources of pay. We tell you the fee before we start.
Why Choose Us for Clergy and Minister Tax Returns
Church and nonprofit work is a core part of our office, not a side line. We help churches with payroll, housing allowance setup and Form 990, so we see both sides of a pastor’s pay. We have prepared returns in Cincinnati since 1993 and are open Monday through Saturday, all year.
Minister returns are one part of the tax filing help for Cincinnati families we offer all year.
Common Questions
Can I opt out of Social Security as a minister?
Only in narrow cases. The IRS lets a minister apply on Form 4361 if they oppose public insurance for religious reasons, not for money reasons. There is a strict deadline, and once approved it cannot be undone. We talk it through before you decide.
My church gives me a W-2. Why do I owe so much?
Ministry pay is not subject to Social Security and Medicare withholding by the church, so you pay that as self-employment tax when you file. Estimated payments or extra income tax withholding can spread it out over the year.
